The Port Moresby Nature Park was happy to welcome the Gulf Isou Rugby League Club, proud competitors in the Digicel ExxonMobil Cup, recently for an enjoyable and meaningful visit. The day celebrated the growing connection between sport and nature, something the Park is continually striving to develop.
Led by the Park’s Marketing and PR Officer, Michael Evoa, the players trekked through the thick rainforest trails. Along the way, they were serenaded by the sounds and views of Papua New Guinea’s prolific wildlife, such as the songs of birds and tree-jumping marsupials. It was a refreshing opportunity for most players to unwind in a peaceful atmosphere outside of the demands of training and competition.
This tour offered more than a break — a chance to reflect on the importance of conservation and connect with the country’s natural heritage. Throughout the tour, players were also struck by the beauty and fragility of the environment they represent on and off the pitch.
Port Moresby Nature Park strongly believes that nature and sport can work hand in hand to promote physical wellness and environmental responsibility. Athletes, who serve as role models in their communities, help amplify the message that caring for one’s health also means caring for the world around us.
The Park would like to give its deepest thanks to the Gulf Isou Rugby League Club for taking time out of their season to volunteer their time to our conservation effort. Their presence not only encouraged our staff and visitors, but it helped to demonstrate the positive impact athletes can make outside of the sports arena.
“We wish the Gulf Isou team all the best for their 2025 season and look forward to more chances in the future to engage sports teams in environmental education and appreciation. It was truly an honour to host such dedicated ambassadors of rugby and nature.”
